On the Scent

On the Scent

Did you know that scientists are just discovering that people smell with their entire bodies! It turns out that humans have more than a trillion olfactory sensors all over the body. These smell sensors contribute to every aspect of our internal life: from directing sperm towards an egg, regulating metabolism & blood pressure by guiding the good bacteria (microbiota) in your gut, to helping your lungs sense and respond to inhaled chemicals floating in the air.

What science has also proven is that each of us has a unique “odor world” in the sense that we each smell a completely different world. The smell receptors in your nose are influenced not only by genetics but also by your smell experience, exposure and general health & well-being. How you perceive a smell and its overall intensity is, in fact, as unique as your own fingerprint.

It may, however, also be ethnocentric. It turns out that only 80% of the world actually experiences what we commonly think of as BO. People from China, Japan, Korea and other parts of northeast Asia simply do not secrete the odorless precursors that bacteria loves to bond to and produce the smells associated with ripe armpits.

So what to do for the 80% of us that experience the occasional BO funk inevitable with athletic excellence? Antiperspirants and deodorants provide temporary relief, but RAW APPLE CIDER or RAW BANANA VINEGAR are natural remedies for body odor among their many amazing properties.

Raw fruit vinegars neutralise the alkaline environment and balance the pH levels of the body creating a hostile environment for the formation of the bacteria that makes your sweat stink. The enzymes in raw, unfiltered vinegar also help control excessive sweating and remove toxins from the body. The buildup of toxins in the body slow the functioning of the liver and kidneys, which in turn results in foul body odor. Raw vinegars contain many essential enzymes, trace minerals, pectin and beneficial bacteria that aid in proper digestion. Ingesting these vinegars helps to detox the body thereby preventing body odor by nipping digestive disorders in the gut.

How to use Apple Cider Or Banana Vinegar for Body Odor

  1. Drink vinegar tonic. Drinking raw fruit vinegar tonic detoxifies your body and boosts your liver. The tonic will flush out toxins from inside the body and thus eliminate the foul body odor. Mix 1 tablespoon of raw apple or banana vinegar in 1 glass of water. Drink 2 – 3 times daily before meals. Add a splash to your to-go water bottle and drink this refreshing quencher before, during and after your workout sessions or whenever thirsty.
  2. Take a vinegar bath. Adding raw fruit vinegar to your bath water, helps rid skin of toxins and bacteria neutralising the body’s alkaline nature and preventing body odor. Pour 1 cup of organic fruit vinegar in your bathtub filled with warm water. Soak for 10 minutes. Repeat regularly to control BO issues.
  3. Use vinegar-tea tree oil spray. Pour 4 – 5 drops of tea tree oil, 1 tablespoon of raw vinegar and 1 cup of water in a spray bottle. Shake well and use it as a natural deodorant or natural cleaner.

For those who need to clean up an existing mess or amp up their odor fighting post-game there’s NO SWEAT® spray. This enzymatic sports spray is the ultimate choice for deodorizing sports gear and other non-machine washables. NO SWEAT® was developed by an athlete & mom of four, then engineered by scientists to naturally deep clean her gnarliest messes - from her own second skin yoga wear to her baby’s most sensitive essentials. Using it’s proprietary ODORLIFT™ formula - a combination & concentration of highly effective cleaning enzymes - all NO SWEAT® cleaners and deodorizers eradicate bacteria at the source. By bonding to protein-based bacteria & dirt, NO SWEAT® dissolves away microbe born toxins and grime naturally. The gold medal formula eats up and chews out odor and bacteria hibernating in your favourite shoes, pads, towels and mats.

Tips for Deodorizing Sports Gear

  1. Remove pads, inserts or any detachable stuffing to allow air to flow between hard covering and the absorbent material where bacteria grow. Spray separated areas liberally with NO SWEAT® antibacterial spray.
  2. Crumple up newspaper and stuff it inside any enclosed spaces (gloves, shoes, sleeves, etc). It will absorb excess sweat and moisture making it harder for bacteria to grow.
  3. Make a baking soda 'sachet' using cheesecloth, a nylon or some other porous fabric. Fill the cloth with 2-3 tbsps of baking soda and tie off the top.  Baking soda is a great way to absorb moisture in humid spaces thereby neutralising odor.
  4. Once a quarter (or when your sports bag really smells), soak your sports gear (everything except leather) in a basin of water with 1-2oz of NO SWEAT® antibacterial laundry detergent. Use a tooth brush to scrub around the seams where most grime collects. Leave it to disinfect for 20-30 min. Rinse out excess suds. Using a towel, blot out as much water as possible. Air dry in a well ventilated area.
